Fun-filled and exciting activities for all ages are planned as part of the Explore Nature Program. The program is provided through the generosity of the Amanda Pierce Nature Fund. All activities are provided at no cost!
Arbor Day: A Celebration of Trees
Join in the fun of Red River’s Annual Arbor Day Ceremony where you will meet Smokey Bear, enjoy a
special program by children in the Nature Discovery Camp, receive free Arbor Day goodies,
and help plant the Arbor Day Tree.
Nature Discovery Camps
First Two Weeks of June
Session 1 — Ages 6 thru 8 (completed 1st grade)
Session 2 — Ages 9 thru 11
At camp, children will experience the wonders of nature that surround Red River. Each day of camp will feature a variety of fun and exciting hands-on outdoor and indoor activities.
Camp participants will receive a T-shirt, water bottle, camp notebook, and other goodies.
Enrollment is limited and registration in advance is required.
Hikes
The Community House staff leads weekly hikes to areas in and around Red River. These popular hikes are planned to be
fun and informational for the participants. All hikes meet at the Community House.
Mondays: Nature Hike
An easy hike on the Red River Nature Trail. Learn about the plants and geology of the area. Suitable for all ages. Meet at the Community House. Please bring water, rain gear, and wear comfortable shoes.
Thursdays: Discovery Hike
The Discovery Hike varies from week to week. A long-time favorite, the Middle Fork Lake Hike is a somewhat strenuous guided hike to a beautiful mountain lake. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring rain gear, water, and a sack lunch. We will carpool for the 7-mile drive to the trailhead. The hike is 4-mile round-trip with a 1,200-foot elevation gain. Other hike options include Columbine and Goose Creek, which both feature a lovely trail along a creek, with varying flat and inclined sections. Both are easy to moderate in difficult.

Fridays: Flower Walk
Learn about the beautiful wildflowers found in and around Red River on this great hike.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and rain gear. Meet at the Community House.
Saturdays: History Hike
Easy 3-mile hike around town. Learn about the history, geography, and culture of Red River and northern New Mexico.
Bring water, rain gear, and wear comfortable shoes.
Weekly Kids' Activities
Kids Nature Crafts – Tuesdays
Kids Nature Crafts is a fun-filled hour of nature-themed crafts and other activities for children ages 6-11, on a first come, first served basis.
Investigation Station – Ongoing Throughout the Summer
The Investigation Station is a hands-on learning area complete with a microscope, magnifying glasses, a weather station, and a variety of nature objects to explore. It is located in Amanda’s Corner at the Community House.
